Starting your own blog can seem very challenging in the beginning, especially if you have no idea what steps to take. You feel the urge to start up something soon but then you are stuck at the very start; no idea and no clue where or how to start your blog. Or maybe you have too many ideas and you aren’t sure which idea is worth pursuing and so you keep jumping from one idea to the next, and in the end you end up doing nothing.
Trust me, you are not the only sailor on that vessel. For the past few weeks I have been wondering what in the world I could write about. I couldn’t seem to find anything worth writing on. Everything I thought of was already being done by somebody else and they seemed to be doing it pretty well. There was no way I could compete, I thought. What could I possibly offer that would be useful to somebody else out there so much that they should spare some time to read it?
What discouraged me even more was that I didn’t know a thing about creating a website. Setting up a domain name, hosting, WordPress, themes, plugins – all that talk sounded like Chinese to me.
At a certain point I started to think that perhaps I just wasn’t meant for this online business. I had read quite a number of articles, watched videos and listened to podcasts talking about how to start a great blog and a successful online business. The more of such material I read, watched or listened to, the more motivated I became to set my presence online, but also, the more overwhelmed I became. I was consuming all this information not knowing exactly what to do with it, jumping back and forth from one blog or online business expert to another.
What I was looking for was some kind of a guide, a roadmap of some sought that would show me the exact path to starting my own blog. I wanted a step by step system that would tell me exactly what to do and how to do it in order to publish my first blog post. Then one evening, as I was watching a video on starting an online business, an idea came to me; instead of sitting and thinking hard trying to figure out what to write about, why not start with my experience on trying to set up my own blog? That way I will have somewhere to start from even before I come up with perfect ideas of what to offer online.
I figured I was better off starting right away and learning as I advance, rather than waiting for that perfect moment when I would have gathered all the information I needed, come up with a great idea to write about and identified my perfect niche. The fact is it may take me a considerable amount of time to figure out what exactly is the perfect idea, but while I brainstorm I can be doing something still.
I look at blogging as being similar to riding a bicycle; you can read all the literature there is on how to ride a bicycle (in the hope of one day winning the Tour de France) but we all know that you cannot learn how to ride a bicycle by reading a book! At some point you have to get on the bike, struggle to find your balance, maybe even fall a couple of times but as long as you get back up, you will eventually learn – and maybe even win the Tour de France, who knows?
My point is you stand a better chance at blogging if you start as soon as possible than if you keep waiting for that perfect idea to come to you. Just like a candle, if your passion to do something burns for too long without you taking any practical steps, that passion or desire will eventually melt and go off. Light another person’s candle before yours goes off.
I am not saying you should not do some research before you publish your first blogpost, what I am saying is you shouldn’t take too much time thinking, you need to take some action as soon as possible! Do not be afraid to make mistakes on the onset as it is through our mistakes that we learn.
We may all have the common factor of having no idea what to write about when starting out but I believe each one of us has a unique experience. Still stuck and have no idea what to write about? Write an article on your very challenge of having no idea, its a good way to Start Blogging Today.
